Our Learning Environment

Our environment is one of a calming, cosy space that ensures the children feel safe and secure and happy in school.

Real, authentic, open-ended resources are easily accessible in the classroom and are placed at eye-level. They include items that are made from natural materials such as wood to encourage children to think of their own ideas when it comes to play time. We use loose parts to encourage fine motor control, pattern making, shape identification, recognising textures, comparing sizes and developing communication.

PE Day in Reception is every Wednesday.

Here is the kit.

Autumn Term 2024

To Treorchy and Beyond is our school Humanities title for Autumn term. In Reception we are looking at ‘Me and My School’ as our inquiry title. We will be finding out about how diverse our families are and celebrate our differences. The children will be looking into the school community and people who helps us in school.

We are being curious, exploring, organising and we will showcase our learning, inviting our parents in to see what we have found out!

Our hook into learning…

We arrived to school to find our classroom covered in PANTS! We had to follow all of the pants and clues around the school to find a surprise at the end…we had a new story book and video message from an alien!
The story book we had was ‘aliens love underpants’ and an alien message to ask for our help! The alien wanted to learn more about us and where we live. We decided we are going to show and tell the alien all about our families, our school community and all of the different celebrations and festivals we take part in at Treorchy Primary School.

Our Learning Experiences

⭐️ Spring Term 2025 ⭐️

Lost in a world of imagination is our schools Languages literacy and communication, title for Spring term. In Reception we are looking into fairy tales with ‘Once upon a time’ as our inquiry title. We will be finding out about many different fairy tales, reading different versions of them and sharing them with our friends and families. The children will be exploring familiar and unfamiliar titles, using their imaginations and creativity to discover new ways of story telling.

We are being curious, exploring, organising and we will showcase our learning, inviting our parents into school to share our very own fairy tale books that we create, before celebrating the end of our inquiry with a Mad Hatters tea party!

Our hook into learning…

We arrived to school to find a fairy tale explosion in our classroom! We had lots of different fairy tale props and clues scattered around the room. We worked together to match the story books to the right story props…enormous turnips, red capes, porridge scattered around and even a faint beanstalk could be found!
We received a message from the Jolly Postman’s wife asking for our help! Fairy tale land was starting to disappear. She’s needed our help to keep the different stories alive. She wants us to read as many fairy tale stories as we can and learn lots about each story, sharing them with our friends and families.
The Jolly Postman’s wife is going to send us clues to the different stories that need our help our help the most. We decided we are going to explore different ways of story telling and use these to share the stories…we will be drawing story maps, retelling stories by dressing up and acting them out, singing songs and creating our own books 📚

⭐️ Summer Term 2025 ⭐️

Valley Innovators is our schools Mathematics and Numeracy, title for Summer term. In Reception we are looking into teamwork and transferring our numeracy skills across the curriculum with ‘Pirate Puzzles’ as our inquiry title. We will be finding out about pirates, their roles and responsibilities, parts of a pirate ship, exploring floating and sinking and creating our own boats. The children will be completing challenges set by the pirates to earn back the resources and belongings the pirates pinch. They will need to work together and using their numeracy skills to complete the puzzles set by the pirates each week!

Our hook into learning…

Captain Bluebelly and his pirate crew have been in our classroom! We arrived to school to find treasure, scrolls and sand in our tuff tray. Bubbles and pirate themed music filled the room.   We read a letter from the pirates which revealed that they had pinched our…. class iPads and laptops!
The captain and his crew also left us a map to follow to help us to get them back. We worked together and collected up all of the golden doubloons they had hidden around the school. But the hunt wasn’t over…we had to use torches to help up complete the next part. Each coin had a number or mathematical symbol hidden on it. We needed to work together to complete the number sentence. We have been working hard on addition and knew just what to do!
Each week the pirates will be visiting our school and will leave us challenges too complete…we will be creating our own treasure maps, reading, following and creating co-ordinates and instructions for our friends to follow and using positional language to complete pirate puzzles 🏴‍☠️
